Should I book my tour in advance?
We recommend booking as far in advance as you feel comfortable. How far is that? We don’t know. It’s up to you. It is now becoming common to be sold out on a particular day sometimes months in advance. Also, please keep in mind that it is our policy to secure (lock in) your reservation only after you have made full payment. This means that your tour is available to other guests until we receive your full payment. We would not want to see you to lose your reservation, so please don’t delay your payment if at all possible.
How may I pay for my tour?
After we receive your booking, we will send you a confirmation email with your booking details attached. We will also send you an invoice through our secure payPal invoicing system. You may pay your invoice using your credit card. We only accept $USD and you will see a 5% payPal fee added for your secure online transaction.
What time do your tours start?
All of our tours begin with pickup at your hotel or guesthouse lobby in Luang Prabang.
- All Shangri-Lao tours start with pickup at your hotel or guesthouse lobby between 8:00am and 8:30am the morning of your tour.
Return (departing the camp) times are listed on our Expedition Schedules page. Depending on road conditions, it takes approximately 30 minutes to travel from our Expedition Camp to Luang Prabang.
What if I don’t see your guide within my pickup times?
Please immediately call our office at 071-252-417. Or ask your hotel staff to assist you in contacting us.
What is included in my package tour?
Our tour packages are ‘all inclusive’ which means you don’t have to worry about anything. They include air conditioned VIP van transfer from your hotel (within Luang Prabang city limits) to our Expedition Camp and back again (round trip), English speaking guide, all meals, boat rides, overnight accommodations (for overnight tours) and waterfall entrance fees. For a more detailed list, please see the Expedition Schedules page where every tour is listed with it’s included services. It’s easy, everything is included in one price!
Should I book a ‘private tour ‘or ‘join tour’?
Join group is our standard tour method and is included in your tour price. It means that you may be joined by others on your tour to form small groups of up to 6 people. This depends on how busy our day is. This helps us logistically and it’s a great way for you to meet other travelers from around the world! But, if this does not suit your needs, you may select the ‘Private’ option when filling out your booking form. This, for an additional fee, will get you your own private VIP van, driver and English speaking guide who are all there to take care of your group and only your group (1 to 6 people). Please refer to your pricing email for private supplement costs. One final note, booking a private tour does not give you priority over other guests if there is a short wait time for an activity.
Do you do custom tours?
I’m sorry, we do not customize our tours. Start and ending times are also not changeable. Since we are not a full service hotel, we only offer overnight accommodations (1 night ) only for our overnight tours. For logistical reasons, we do not pick-up or drop-off at bus stations or the airport. Thank you for your understanding.
Do you need volunteers?
I’m sorry, we do not have any volunteer positions available at Shangri-Lao. If you were thinking of volunteering, we thank you for your kind intentions. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer in Laos if you continue your search. Best of luck!
Your package tour includes all of your meals during your Expedition. Our Shangri-Lao Treehouse Restaurant is capable of accommodating all of your dietary needs. If you have specific dietary needs, please kindly indicate them in your reservation request under ‘special requirements’ and we will make every effort to accommodate you.
Weather and Tad Sae waterfall levels?
All of our tours operate 365 days a year, rain or shine. Weather in Laos is hopelessly unpredictable. I can’t even begin to try to guess what the conditions will be like on the day of your tour. The Tad Sae waterfall may be dry from mid March until the rains come (dates vary widely from year to year) but you may still explore them during your tour. Or you may relax at the swimming pool or visit a nearby village as an alternative activity. During the any season, you may experience rain on your tour, so it’s not a bad idea to have a rain poncho or a small umbrella handy. To be honest, the rainy days are some of the most beautiful days to be at the camp so don’t let the weather scare you!
Do you offer discounts?
We respectfully say we are sorry, but we do not offer discounts. We are an elephant sanctuary and every tour we sell (every dollar we earn) allows us to further our mission, which is to help as many elephants in Laos as we can. If we gave discounts, it would only hinder our ability to carry out our mission. We appreciate your understanding and your support.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel your tour, it must done be by email to email@example.com and acknowledged by our staff by reply. A 25% fee will apply to any cancellation. A 50% fee will apply to a cancellation between 24 and 48 hours before your tour start time. A 100% fee will apply to a cancellation within 24 hrs of your tour start time or if you no-show.
What is your policy for children?
Children up to 4 years old are free of charge and they may not partake in the bathing activity for safety reasons. Children 5 to 8 years old receive a 50% discount. Children 9 years and older are charged full price. Also, for safety reasons, children 8 and under must be accompanied by and adult at all times.
What about safety?
Everyone’s safety is our primary concern here at Shangri-Lao. Riding elephants, bathing elephants and trekking in the jungle are physical activities and may be considered challenging by some. Therefore, our tours require a certain level of physical fitness to safely and enjoyably participate in them. Those with injuries or who are elderly, or very young may have difficulties mounting, dismounting or bathing an elephant as well as trekking (hiking) through our jungle trails. When choosing your tour, please read the tour programs carefully on our website and we kindly ask that you to consider the physical condition of those in your party. I am sorry, but we can not make this decision for you. You must decide if you are capable or not to do our tour activities.
What shall I bring on my tour?
We suggest a swimsuit, small towel, long trousers, comfortable walking shoes/sandals and personal items such as medications, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc. If you are staying overnight with us, our luxury tents are equipped with mosquito nets.
